Internet censorship is something that is becoming more and more common in India. Websites are being blocked using various means and blocking sites using court orders has become more pervasive in the past few years.
Various entities have been trying to get a list of all blocked sites and the reasoning behind the block from the Indian government but the requests have been rejected with the following message : Copies of Blocking order for which blocking instructions issued by DoT are not being provided are not provided as per Clause 16 of "Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009" which says "Strict confidentiality shall be maintained regarding all the requests and complaints received and actions taken thereof."
This site was created to have a means to identify the blocked sites using a bruteforce method.
Methodology used to identify Blocked Websites
We follow these steps to identify blocked sites:
- Download the list of top 1 million sites and load it into our database
- Use a python script to try to access each site in a loop and get the results
